The two primary types are open-cell and closed-cell spray foam:
- Open-Cell: Lighter, softer, and offers sound-dampening qualities. Generally less expensive but has a lower R-value per inch.
- Closed-Cell: Denser and more rigid, providing a higher R-value per inch. Additionally, it adds structural integrity and is resistant to water.
Many modern spray foams are designed to be eco-friendly. They can reduce energy consumption by preventing air leaks, leading to less energy waste. However, it’s essential to choose products that have low or no ozone-depleting potential (ODP) and low global warming potential (GWP).
When properly installed and protected, spray foam insulation can last the lifetime of your home or building, often upwards of 20-30 years. It generally does not sag, settle, or degrade under normal conditions.
Yes, especially open-cell spray foam, which is excellent for sound dampening. It can minimize airborne sound transmission through walls, ceilings, and floors.
Closed-cell spray foam is impermeable to water, making it resistant to mold growth. Open-cell foam, while more permeable, also significantly reduces the likelihood of mold as it doesn’t retain water.
